West Midlands Social Economy Survey

This short survey is being conducted to gather critical insight into social economy organisations operating in the region, to shape the future strategy and support packages available to grow the social economy in the West Midlands.

SWM member West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) and Power to Change, in collaboration with the Centre for Local Economic Strategies (CLES), have analysed secondary data to update the latest understanding of the scale and make-up of the social economy sector in the West Midlands Combined Authority area. As of November 2024, over 9,300 social economy organisations have been identified as operating within the region.

WMCA have an ambition to double the size of the social economy in the region, to support in building community wealth, and sustainable and inclusive economic development. More social and democratic ownership of the economy can serve to increase the flow of wealth and power into local communities, and mission and purpose-led organisations are designed and driven to serve the needs of people, places and the planet.

This survey has been designed to gather greater insight on the social economy organisations and the impact the sector is having across the region, and most importantly, to inform future policy and programmes to strengthen and scale the social economy in the region.
